چکیده

16 The common practice of remediating metal contaminated mine soils with compost can reduce 17 metal mobility and promote re-vegetation, but the effect of introduced or colonising 18 earthworms on metal solubility is largely unknown. We amended soils from an As/Cu (1150 19 mgAs kg and 362 mgCu kg) and Pb/Zn mine (4550 mgPb kg and 908 mgZn kg) with 0, 20 5, 10, 15 and 20 % compost and then introduced Lumbricus terrestris. Porewater was 21 sampled and soil extracted with water to determine trace element solubility, pH and soluble 22 organic carbon. Compost reduced Cu, Pb and Zn, but increased As solubility. Earthworms 23 decreased water soluble Cu and As but increased Pb and Zn in porewater. The effect of the 24 earthworms decreased with increasing compost amendment. The impact of the compost and 25 the earthworms on metal solubility is explained by their effect on pH and soluble organic 26 carbon and the environmental chemistry of each element. 27 28

Impact of earthworms on trace element solubility in contaminated mine soils amended with green waste compost.

The common practice of remediating metal contaminated mine soils with compost can reduce metal mobility and promote revegetation, but the effect of introduced or colonising earthworms on metal solubility is largely unknown. We amended soils from an As/Cu (1150 mg As kg(-1) and 362 mg Cu kg(-1)) and Pb/Zn mine (4550 mg Pb kg(-1) and 908 mg Zn kg(-1)) with 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% compost and then in...

Phytostabilization of amended soils polluted with trace elements using the Mediterranean shrub: Rosmarinus officinalis.

We evaluate the mid-term effects of two amendments and the establishment of R. officinalis on chemical and biochemical properties in a trace element contaminated soil by a mine spill and the possible use of this plant for stabilization purposes. The experiment was carried out using containers filled with trace element polluted soil, where four treatments were established: organic treatment (bio...

Quality of trace element contaminated soils amended with compost under fast growing tree Paulownia fortunei plantation.

The use of fast growing trees could be an alternative in trace element contaminated soils to stabilize these elements and improve soil quality. In this study we investigate the effect of Paulownia fortunei growth on trace element contaminated soils amended with two organic composts under semi-field conditions for a period of 18 months. The experiment was carried out in containers filled with tr...

DNA damage in earthworms from highly contaminated soils: assessing resistance to arsenic toxicity by use of the Comet assay.

Earthworms native to the former mine site of Devon Great Consols (DGC), UK reside in soils highly contaminated with arsenic (As). These earthworms are considered to have developed a resistance to As toxicity. The mechanisms underlying this resistance however, remain unclear. In the present study, non-resistant, commercially sourced Lumbricus terrestris were exposed to a typical DGC soil in labo...

Effect of soil properties on lead bioavailability and toxicity to earthworms.

Soil properties are important factors modifying metal bioavailability to ecological receptors. Twenty-one soils with a wide range of soil properties (USA; http://soils.usda.gov/technical/classification/taxonomy/) were amended with a single concentration of Pb (2,000 mg/kg) to determine the effects of soil properties on Pb bioavailability and toxicity to earthworms. Earthworm mortality ranged fr...
